First course in the teacher series, designed as a synthesis of online and blended learning models from across the nation. See many blended learning models in action.

This course is designed to introduce K-12 teachers to blended and online learning. If you are looking to implement blended learning in your classroom, this course is for you. Blended learning is defined and all primary models are explored. Participants begin to identify their goal for blended learning and what model would best fit their needs.

Topics include:

  • Current landscape of blended learning across the nation
  • Changes roles of the student and teacher in the blended learning classroom
  • Distinction between instructional technology and blended learning
  • Differentiate between hybrid and disruptive innovative models
  • Areas of competencies needed for the blended learning and online teacher


Duration: 15-20 hours
Time Frame: 4 weeks (suggested)
Audience: K-12 teachers
Course Format: Independent Study
Independent Study (IS) courses are self-directed and do not have a course instructor. Participants will:

  • Manage your own learning experience through pacing and completion
  • Set goals and define what is worthwhile for you to learn
  • Take initiative and responsibility for your own learning
  • Keep a reflective journal to process new knowledge
  • Utilize the discussion board to share thoughts and projects with others

Participants will have access to the course for three months.


Learning Modules: This course is divided into four learning modules which contain lessons, discussions, check for understanding interactives, projects, and assessments. Estimated times for each module are provided below. Four weeks is suggested to complete the course.

Module 1 – Blended Learning Defined
Time: Approximately 4 hours

  • Define blended learning.
  • Identify elements that make a blended learning classroom.
  • Recognize key vocabulary utilized in the online and blended arena.

Module 2 – Hybrid Models in Action
Time: Approximately 4 hours

  • Differentiate between instructional technology and blended learning.
  • Distinguish between hybrid and disruptive innovative models.
  • Explore three hybrid Rotation models:
    • Station Rotation, Lab Rotation and Flipped Classroom.
  • View blended learning models across the nation.

Module 3 – Disruptive Models in Action
Time: Approximately 4 hours

  • Identify what classifies a model as a disruptive innovation.
  • Explore four disruptive models:
    • Individual Rotation, Flex, A La Carte, and Enriched Virtual.
  • View blended learning models across the nation.

Module 4 – Changing the Role of Teachers
Time: Approximately 3 hours

  • Examine the need for change from the classroom and student standpoint.
  • Analyze how blended learning changes the role of the student and teacher.
  • Identify the areas of competencies needed for the blended learning and online teacher.
  • Reflect on your 'next steps' for becoming an online/blended teacher.
